Meet outside the Old Minton Library & Stoke School of Art, 79 London Road, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, ST4 7QE

Sculptor Arnold Machin produced the iconic ‘Queen’s Head' sculpture used on 'definitive' postage stamps since 1967. This informal London Road walk & talk will focus on Machin's roots & life long connection with Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire.

The event will be led by Danny Callaghan (Ceramic City Stories) & Andy Perkin (Potteries Heritage Society).

ONLINE: Virtual showcase of 'profile portraits' & 'side selfies' made by artists, potters & all of us. Check out this playful ‘stamp sheet’ style online showcase of head & shoulders portraits inspired by Stoke-on-Trent creative hero Arnold Machin’s iconic ‘Queen's Head’ definitive stamp image (ceramic bas-relief sculpture).

What: 

IN REAL LIFE: Eclectic collection of 'profile portraits' & 'side selfies' made by artists, potters & all of us. Check out this playful ‘stamp sheet’ style window display of head & shoulders portraits inspired by Stoke-on-Trent creative hero Arnold Machin’s iconic ‘Queen's Head’ definitive stamp image (ceramic bas-relief sculpture).

Where:

CLAYHEAD Winkhill Mill Swan Street Stoke-on-Trent ST4 7RH 

*Window display viewed from Swan Street, no access to Winkhill Mill without prior arrangement. 

When:

10am - 3pm every Thursday & Friday
10am - 1pm every Saturday *not open Saturday 18th June

Open to view throughout June (from Thursday 9th - Thursday 30th June)
*The Winkhill window exhibition is viewed ‘remotely' from Swan Street. We will aim to open the window display as much as possible at other times during the week. If you want to see the exhibition during other times, please let us know & we will try to respond to your request : email hello@ceramiccitystories.info or call Danny (Callaghan) 07999 350176.

#StampSlam Party Winkhill Mill, Swan Street, Stoke ST4 7RH 6pm - 9pm Wednesday 1st June. Celebrate Machin’s iconic ‘Queen’s Head’ image by creating your own head & shoulders ‘profile portrait’ with help from a team of local artists, ceramicists & creatives working in residence on the night; including Phil Hardaker (ceramic artist), Natalie Jenkinson (ceramic artist), Jerome Whittingham (photographer), Jane Wells (artist & maker), Steve Shaw (artist & printmaker), Gillie Nicholls (ceramic sculptor), Ian Mood (artist), Cath Ralph (ceramic artist), Phil Rawle (artist) & more to be confirmed. Drinks, nibbles & music will help this relaxed creative get together in the interesting & evocative surroundings of this (working) traditional tile works. Start your extended Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend early with nice people & some creative fun at Winkhill Mill. FREE #PortraitProfile #SideSelfie

Sculptor Arnold Machin produced the iconic ‘Queen’s Head' stamp. He was born & lived in Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire. He worked at Minton during his early years & later had strong connections with Wedgwood.

This informal walk & talk will offer an introduction to Arnold Machin’s life & explore his local roots & life long connection with Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire. We will walk in his footsteps along London Road (Stoke) between Stoke School of Art & The Villas, a route & area he knew so well. The stroll will be led by Danny Callaghan (Ceramic City Stories) & Andy Perkin (Potteries Heritage Society). You will find out a bit more about this creative giant & his local connections. We welcome any additional knowledge or interesting comments you can share about Machin. We hope you can join us! FREE

Please gather from 10:15am; walk will set off at 10:30am prompt. The return walk is just over 1 mile (from Stoke School of Art to The Villas & back to Stoke School of Art). There is 2 hr FREE PARKING at Sainsburys for those who need it.
