  • #ProfilePortrait is part of STAMP: an artist & community led celebration of Stoke-on-Trent born artist Arnold Machin & his iconic ‘profile portrait’ of Queen Elizabeth II used on ‘definitive’ postage stamps since 1967 to the present day.

Machin’s talent was rooted & nurtured in his home city’s historic ceramic industry as an apprentice at Minton’s & later working with Wedgwood over many years.

Arnold Machin modelled the Queen’s Head profile portrait used on stamps from clay as a ‘bas-relief’ ceramic sculpture. His image has been printed on an estimated 220 billion stamps over the last 55 years making it the most reproduced work of art ever!
