Exploring Arnold Machin's Stoke

Sculptor Arnold Machin produced the iconic ‘Queen’s Head' sculpture used on 'definitive' postage stamps since 1967. This informal London Road walk & talk will focus on Machin's roots & life long connection with Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire.

The event will be led by Danny Callaghan (Ceramic City Stories) & Andy Perkin (Potteries Heritage Society).

Potteries Tile Trail | Love Letters

Meet outside Winkhill MIll, Swan Street, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, ST4 7RH

This relaxed walk & talk will explore & celebrate some examples of Stoke-on-Trent's extensive collection of historic street signs made from ceramic ‘tile’ letters embedded in the brickwork of period houses and buildings (late c.19 - early c.20). You will find out a bit more about the fascinating story of 'in situ' ceramic signs as well as this interesting residential neighbourhood. The walk will be led by Danny Callaghan from Ceramic City Stories & Andy Perkin from Potteries Heritage Society.

An opportunity to see behind the scenes at Winkhill Mill, Swan Street, Stoke, a traditional ceramic tile manufactory. 'The Firing Line' produces dust pressed tiles using traditional techniques & c.100 year old cast iron machinery. It is also home to Ceramic City Stories & CLAYHEAD Collection.

Two 'Secret Museum | Open Doors' events will be offered during national Heritage Open Days 2022:

Secret Museum | Window Display

A unique showcase of community & crowd-sourced tiles, ceramics & related ‘curios’ displayed in this unique 'shop window' of a traditional tile works. Visitors will be be able to enjoy 50+ small scale exhibits viewed ‘remotely’ from Swan Street.

Please note: The window display will be open for viewing from the street during the stated times below but access inside Winkhill Mill is only available as part of the two ‘Open Doors' events offered during HODs 2022. Please see other listing for more details.
