*Please note: These vintage tiles are UNUSED i.e. they have NOT been attached to a wall or floor surface & are therefore completely clean of adhesive & in effect in ‘as new’ condition. This is extremely rare for vintage tiles made nearly 4 decades ago. We aim to select the very best examples for you but there are occasional small chips to the rear of the tile i.e. not visible when displayed or installed. More significant or visible marks or blemishes will be highlighted in photographs, descriptions & reflected in price.

The Art Tile Company created these high quality ceramic tiles nearly 40 years ago. They combined (then) state of the art technology with traditional skills & techniques to create authentic replica designs. Tiles were decorated using different techniques including transfer or lithograph printing & hand painting (sometimes combined). The complexity of these processes is reflected in the value & price of each product.

Printed & painted patterns can vary & occasionally even lose some of their design register during the production & firing process. Even with a batch of the same coloured tiles; there are always likely to be colour variations due to these hand decoration techniques & even kiln position. We will always try to select & provide matching tiles when customers order a number of the same designs. Glaze surfaces can be uneven & occasionally include ‘imperfections’. We feel this is inherent to the authenticity & character of these period replica tiles. Anyone who has studied original Victorian tiles will know that they were subject to even more variation & sometimes quite significant ‘blemishes’; mainly due to the somewhat imprecise nature of coal-fired bottle ovens. We respect that some people want more standard ‘perfect’ tiles. If this is the case; then perhaps these tiles probably aren’t for you. However, we would love you to consider them for your needs; we don’t believe you will be disappointed!
